European Flat Oyster (Ostrea edulis L.) in the Eastern Baltic as Evidence of Long-Distance Trade in Medieval and Early Modern Times

چکیده
Along most of the European littoral, oysters were appreciated as a wholesome and palatable food from Stone Age onwards, yet transported much further their natural habitats when long-distance trade in marine foodstuffs began medieval times. The brackish waters Baltic Sea are not considered suitable environment for this mollusc, therefore all archaeological oyster shell finds result import to eastern Baltic. In study, over 1000 shells found different early modern contexts Estonia analysed, obtained data recorded repository. Some conclusions set out, based on size shape, breakage traces, but more detailed taphonomic studies left future. This study identifies earliest imports by material written sources. Both show records earlier than 16th century AD. Although no information is preserved about exact origin imported Estonia, beds probably exploited those central North Sea, i.e., Wadden Sea.

Geographic structure in the European flat oyster (Ostrea edulis L.) as revealed by Microsatellite polymorphism.
Genetic differentiation of the flat oyster (Ostrea edulis) was studied along the European coast, from Norway to the Black Sea, by means of variation at five microsatellite loci. The results show a mild but significant isolation-by-distance profile, a noticeable between-sample variance in expected heterozygosity, and a tendency for Atlantic populations to be less variable than Mediterranean ones...
متن کاملEuropean fl at oyster - Ostrea edulis
Distribution Th e European fl at oyster, Ostrea edulis, a native of Europe, occurs naturally from Norway to Morocco in the North-Eastern Atlantic and in the whole Mediterranean Basin (Fig.1) (1). It has been a harvested species for at least 6000 years. Natural populations are also observed in eastern North America, from Maine to Rhode Island, following intentional introductions in the 1940s and...
متن کاملCharacterization of 27 microsatellite loci in the European flat oyster Ostrea edulis.
The flat oyster Ostrea edulis is native to Europe and populations have been severely depleted by the parasite Bonamia ostreae since the 1980s. Additional genetic markers are required to improve population genetics study and linkage map development for selection for B. ostrea-resistance in this species. Here, we characterized 27 novel microsatellite loci for O. edulis. Number of alleles per locu...
متن کاملReduced female gene flow in the European flat oyster Ostrea edulis.
The geographical structure of 15 natural populations of the flat oyster (Ostrea edulis L.) was assessed by single-strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) of a 313-base-pair (bp) fragment of the mitochondrial 12S-rRNA gene. Fourteen haplotypes were observed, with one being dominant in the Mediterranean samples and another one in the Atlantic populations. The geographically extreme populations sa...
متن کاملMolecular detection and quantification of the protozoan Bonamia ostreae in the flat oyster, Ostrea edulis.
Bonamia ostreae is an intracellular protozoan which is recognized as a cause of mortality in European populations of flat oysters (Ostrea edulis). Based on the recent characterization of actin genes of B. ostreae, specific primers were designed for real-time PCR using SYBR Green chemistry. Specificity was demonstrated by the unique melting temperature peak observed in positive samples and by th...
